QATC Code of Conduct

‘Queer and the Classical’ stands against harassment, bullying, intimidation or any other instances of exclusion, whether informed by malicious intent or unconscious bias.

This means we will not tolerate any discrimination concerning age, gender, sexual orientation, race, language, national or social origin, disability, physical appearance, religion, or other protected status. If any such discrimination occurs, we pledge to intervene and will respond through a verbal warning or, in extreme cases, removal of the individuals involved from this and/or future events.

The Code of Conduct here outlined applies to both in-person and online activities in the context of any QATC event and must be unanimously respected by attendees, speakers, co-convenors, and anyone who engages with QATC-related content on any online platform.

We recognise discrimination, harassment and exclusion as:

  • Negative comments about race/ethnicity, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, physical appearance, citizenship, or other protected categories.

  • Any interpersonal or environmental communications that convey stereotypes, rudeness, and insensitivity that demean a person’s identity.

  • Conscious, deliberate and either subtle or explicit biased attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors that are communicated to marginalized groups through environmental cues, verbalizations, or behaviors.

  • Negative and/or unwelcome comments regarding someone’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, relationships, drugs, and employment.

  • Intimidation or threats, including sharing images or text to sexually harass.

  • Threatening or other endangerment of minors.

  • Deliberate and/or repeated misgendering and/or use of deadnames.

  • Deliberate or accidental “outing” of any aspect of a person’s identity without consent.

  • Communications or environmental cues that exclude, negate, or nullify the thoughts, feelings, or experiential realities of protected categories.

  • Any activity meant to convey or cultivate hostility.

  • Ad hominem insults or other attacks.

  • Encouraging, excusing, or contributing to the above behavior.

These guidelines are by no means exhaustive: within as well as outside academia, there are also many other forms of silencing and erasure. No one’s success, prestige, or proximity to power should enable them to speak over anyone else, dismiss others’ ideas, or otherwise devalue others’ participation and point of view. Such instances of conscious and/or unconscious bias will also result in intervention from the QATC team.

We also wish to acknowledge that these guidelines, which we have been workshopping after our 2022 conference, are open and evolving. Without the imposition of additional labor on marginalised people, in the case of any complaint, critique, or observation, always feel free to contact us by emailing queerandtheclassical@gmail.com.
